Early life struggles

As a child into my teens I had many troubles with my health. When I was 10 I developed
diphtheria and I was paralyzed for several months. I had to be wheeled around in a baby carriage. I was also diagnosed with a very rare problem called flat eyeballs. I had to ware thick eyeglasses. I once broke my collar bone while combing my hair. My mom saved my life when I nearly chocked on a peach pit. She shoved it down my throat with her finger. As I grew older I would always have headaches caused by stress. Throughout my life my body has not been to kind.

Help Us!!!

In 1947 the Soviet Union began making moves that were less than friendly. They began to pressure Turkey, and through guerrillas, tried to take over Greece. Lots of commotion broke out and the cry for help became evident. I was forced to ask congress to aid the two countries. This act became known as the Truman Doctrine. The Marshall Plan, named for my Secretary of State, stimulated spectacular economic recovery in war-torn western Europe. Overall this was the beggining of the cold war.

Horse Fall

In 1917 I was enlisted in the Missouri National Guard. In 1918 I was elected an officer, and I was shipped to the front line. On the 29th of August that year, my artillery battery came under German fire. My poor horse was struck by shrapnel and fell into a hole made by a shell. I was trapped beneath the horse, and I had to be pulled out. With most of my men gone, I had to muster my men's strength. I used some salty language I learned on the railroad. The men were so shocked at my words, that they immediately swung into action.

Korean War

It all began on June 25, 1950 when North Korea run at the time by Kim ll-Sun invaded South Korea. Truman called for a Naval blockade of Korea but financially it was not possible to do. So, instead Harry persuaded the United Nations to intervene. China surprised Truman by doing a full-scale invasion during November. The U.N was forced back to the 38Th parallel (The first dividing line between North and South Korea). Casualties between the UN and US troops were large, so Truman denied an attack the UN was planning on China. This war carried on for a frustrating two years along with over 30,000 Americans dying in the process. After two years a peace treaty was created and ended the Korean war.

1948 Election

Truman is famous for his come-from-behind reelection in the year 1948. During the spring of this year his public gave him a thirty six percent chance of winning. At the Democratic National Convention Harry S. Truman placed a civil rights plank within the party platform. This was designed to compromise the northern and southern sections of his party. Harry was actually so widely expected to lose that newspapers posted the wrong headlines that he had lost when in fact he had done the opposite. The way the votes were counted was over the phone and most people at the time did not own a phone which changed the data between Truman and his opponent, Thomas Dewey. The final and correct total added up was 303 votes to Truman and 189 votes to Dewey.

Surprise Presidency

Upon Franklin D Roosevelt's traumatic death Harry S. Truman was suddenly the 33 president of the United States. He was a veteran politician and legislator, but he had absolutely no experience on foreign policy. All Truman had to rely on was his own instincts and advisers. Former President Franklin Roosevelt had not prepared Truman at all to become president which created many problems for Harry S. Truman. Before the election of 1944 Truman replaced Henry Wallace on the democratic ticket along with Franklin Roosevelt. In total Harry S. Truman had only been a vice president for eighty two days before Franklin Roosevelt's death.

The Berlin Airlift

In 1948 The Cold War was already in it's beginning stages. The Russians had blockaded the Western sector of Berlin. Because of this movement, I created a massive airlift to give supplies to the Berliners. The Russians soon backed down. All the while I was negotiating a military alliance to protect western nations. Established in 1949, this became the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
